Using Landscape Metrics Analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process to Assess Water Harvesting Potential Sites in Jordan

چکیده
Jordan is characterized as a “water scarce” country. Therefore, conserving ecosystem services such as water regulation and soil retention is challenging. In Jordan, rainwater harvesting has been adapted to meet those challenges. However, the spatial composition and configuration features of a target landscape are rarely considered when selecting a rainwater-harvesting site. This study aimed to introduce landscape spatial features into the schemes for selecting a proper water-harvesting site. Landscape metrics analysis was used to quantify 10 metrics for three potential landscapes (i.e., Watershed 104 (WS 104), Watershed 59 (WS 59), and Watershed 108 (WS 108)) located in the Jordanian Badia region. Results of the metrics analysis showed that the three non–vegetative land cover types in the three landscapes were highly suitable for serving as rainwater harvesting sites. Furthermore, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to prioritize the fitness of the three target sites by comparing their landscape metrics. Results of AHP indicate that the non-vegetative land cover in the WS 104 landscape was the most suitable site for rainwater harvesting intervention, based on its dominance, connectivity, shape, and low degree OPEN ACCESS Environments 2015, 2 416 of fragmentation. Our study advances the water harvesting network design by considering its landscape spatial pattern.

Determining the Potential of Rain Water Harvesting Based on Geomorphological Factors and Analytic Hierarchy Process (Kalat Watershed, Khorasan Razavi Province)
In this research, a method is proposed to identify and determine rainwater harvesting potential in a watershed based on geomorphological factors through integrating Geographical Information System (GIS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). For this purpose, land use, land cover, topography, geology, soil, vegetation, and soil permeability factors were considered the as main geomorphological ...
متن کاملPerformance comparison of land change modeling techniques for land use projection of arid watersheds
The change of land use/land cover has been known as an imperative force in environmental alteration, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. This research was mainly aimed to assess the validity of two major types of land change modeling techniques via a three dimensional approach in Birjand urban watershed located in an arid climatic region of Iran. Thus, a Markovian approach based on two suit...
متن کاملIdentification of suitable sites for subsurface flow harvesting using underground dam (Case study: Border basins of Torbat-e-Jam County)
Every year, large amounts of the country's water resources leave the country through political borders. Subsurface water is part of these resources that flows on the dry bed of rivers and becomes inaccessible without proper exploitation. Since Iran has many common borders with neighboring countries, it is necessary to pay attention to this issue. One of the appropriate solutions to prevent the ...
متن کاملWater Quality Restoration Using Landscape Metrics Analysis: A Case Study in the Golestan Province of Iran
Abstract The results of an integrated study aimed at restoring water quality in a large watershed including seven catchments in north east Iran are presented in this paper. This case study demonstrates how landscape metrics reflect direct or surrogate causes of the land use practices that are the determinants of water quality parameters. Water quality factors included EC, pH, Cl-1, HCO3-1, SO4-...
متن کاملStudy of Different Utilization of Arak Urban Wastewater Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process
The water crisis in arid and semi-arid areas causes more integrated studies regarding the utilization of urban wastewater. In this research, the analytic hierarchy process was conducted in 2014 according to the relative weight of criteria resulted from a questionnaire and a primary normal matrix. The results showed that the criteria including the quality of wastewater and benefit per co...
